The Great Global Warming Swindle

I noticed that Tars, a collegue of mine, had bookmarked a documentary called The Great Global Warming Swindle. It is a documentary claiming to be filled with scientific proof why man made global warning is a hoax.

I’m not claiming that I don’t believe in global warming, I just don’t know. I do feel guilty that I drive a car that consumes more than an average car, although I do use it for what it is made (but then again, just for my pleasure). It is true that these days, questioning global warming is a taboo.

Several things they claim that I found interesting:

• There have been moments in the past that the levels of CO2 were 10 times bigger than they are today, without higher temperatures.
• The stratosphere containing all the greenhouse gasses like CO2, are not rising, and it is mainly the surface of the earth that is warming.
• There is a connection between temperature and CO2 levels, but apparently CO2 levels are following temperature changes, and not vice versa as Al Gore claims in An Inconvenient Thruth.
• Variation in solar activity is causing the changes in temperatures. This is even true looking at a very fine grain, like the decades in the last century.
• In the 1970s there were documentaries warning for global cooling, and an upcoming ice age.
• Malaria doesn\'t move up because of global warming. In the 1930s, there was a massive epidemic in Russia that caused 600.000 people to die, 10.000 people dying above the arctic circle. Mosquitoes (also the malaria mosquito) live in very cold area\'s as well.
• The US Government alone spends $4 billion a year to research related to man made global warning. Scientists speaking against man made global warming have problems finding funding for their research.

David Miliband, the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs in the UK, gave a a rebuttal of the main points of the film. The wikipedia article contains many other references to people with an opinion about this topic.
