AugmentOS, The Open Source Operating System for smart glasses
I’ve had a Ray Ban Meta Smart Glasses for a while now. I need to wear glasses in order to properly see, especially for reading, but also to give my eyes some rest while looking far away, so spending a hundred euro’s more for a “smart frame” made a lot of sense. Although it still is early days for smart glasses, I’ve come to like them, and use them every day.The feature I use most is the built in headphones, and I’ve been using them to listen to music, podcasts, and make calls. It’s also nice to get notifications announced. It is my de facto headset, and I’m happy with it.
Also, they have built in camera’s, and I take video’s with them from time to time, for example on my ski touring trip last month. In the US, they can also be used to ask questions about the things you see., like “Hey Meta, which recipe can I make with the ingredients I see?” but in Europe, they are limited to basic questions like “Hey Meta, what is the time?” or “Hey Meta, call John via whatsapp audio”.
With more than 50% of people wearing glasses, it is the most natural wearable device. And still, they haven’t really taken off. I believe that within 2 years, Apple will release their version of smart glasses.
I just bumped on the recent announcement of AugmentOS. It is an open source operating system for smart glasses with the ability to create apps. No support for iOS yet, which is a blocker for me, but they plan to support it “soon”.
Video with some features of the AugmentOS, showing how things can also be projected on the glasses:
A promising project, and I’m looking forward to see how it, and the rest of the smart glasses offerings evolve.
